Priced at $10, this was an excellent rerelease. Was there a new-machine compatible version of the game floating around somewhere? No. Was there any place to buy MTW previously? No. It wasn't an HD remake (does such a game need one?), but it's the same vein of rereleasing older games for new machines. Medieval: Total War! This game got a rerelease as well. Heroes 3 HD remake? It gets a heavy down vote from me. Yet there was a perfectly useable H3 complete sitting on GOG for less money.

This wasn't Heroes 3 complete, with all the expansions built in, this was the base game. My opinion on HD remakes depends greatly on price and availability of the original.

Just as with a new game it might not be worth full price to you but it'd be hard to call it a cheap cash grab on the developer's part.

If, by contrast, they lovingly redo a substantial percentage of the art assets, possibly also cleaning up interface issues to bring it up to modern standards and generally overhaul the game that's a lot of work being done, and a genuinely nicer product(something like ripping out IPX and adding modern netcode would also be the sort of thing that shows actually caring). Those aren't worth nothing if they at least get the game running under Win7 without a lot of futzing, or mean that you don't need to scour the secondary market for a used CD that isn't scratched but anything other than bargain pricing is a really nasty cash grab. There have been some pretty egregiously lazy 'HD remakes', where most of the art assets are still blurry sludge, mismatches between old geometry and new textures that cause weird glitches haven't been fixed and a general pall of apathy hangs over everything. I'd obviously be less excited about a near-new price if I'd also purchased the original but I'd argue that there is room for flexibility depending on how much 'remake' is actually included in 'HD remake'. As for FF VII, I played it twice and certainly don't intend to play through it again just because the graphics are prettier. In the end, it's the player's responsability to buy or not to buy each re-release of a popular game. With a game that I loved, or that I'm sure would be a great experience, I could push as far as 15-20€, but for most of them, I wouldn't go further than the usual prices on mobile (i.e. What I would have a problem with, is a price too close to that of a new game. Nothing out there as convenient as DOSbox but not entirely hopeless.Īs someone who is a lot into retrogaming, I say: why not? There's nothing wrong with something that could bring money to Square Enix as well as re-release great old games to a new generation (especially with new features / graphics). Again, those tend to substantially weaken 3d performance(but less than they used to, it's not "Nope you only get a framebuffer that's just enough to qualify as 'has a graphics card', tough luck" anymore) but they allow you to run 100% actual Win95/98 and so long as you don't connect them to the internet or transfer anything other than game installers to them the fact that they are horribly riddled with unfixed security flaws is pretty much irrelevant. My success rate in nowhere near perfect but I have had it work. It's a bit of a crapshoot but I've found on occasion that Linux+WINE actually helps here: WINE's implementation of win32 obviously lags Microsoft's but that's a virtue if the problem is that your OS is too new for the game and, while Linux is unlikely to do your GPU's capabilities any favors that matters a lot less for older games where you are ridiculously overpowered anyway. For earlier games you've got dosbox and newer games are usually easier to get running (alebit sometimes needing a fan patch) which just leaves this 9x shaped hole in my games collection.

All those games that were made for 9x and yet are hard or impossible to run on modern Windows.
